Recycling and Litter Prevention

The Recycling and Litter Prevention Program provides education and awareness to the residents of Washington County about the benefits of recycling and the harmful effects of litter and illegal dumping.
In the year 2000, 111.83 tons of recyclable materials were collected from 14 residential recycling drop off locations and 3 permanent recycling barns with 24 hour drop off located in Barlow, Beverly and Lower Salem.
Items accepted by the Recycling Program
Newspaper (bagged or bundled)
Magazines and catalogs (bundled or in paper bags)
Aluminum-cans, foil and pie tins
Steel cans-food and vegetable cans
Glass food and beverage containers (separate clear, brown and green)
Plastic #1 and #2 (look for number on bottom)
Corrugated cardboard (flatten boxes)
All items should be clean with lids removed!
These items cannot be accepted
Window glass
Cookware
Ceramics
Light bulbs
Pizza boxes
Anything that contained oil
