Washington-Morgan Community Action celebrates Community Action Month this May

Nationwide, Community Action Agencies create victories daily for low-income families and individuals. This May, Washington-Morgan Community Action joins our colleagues throughout the country in commemorating National Community Action Month.

Community Action Agencies (CAAs) were created in 1964 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act. Washington-Morgan Community Action was incorporated in 1967, with the founding executive director Anthony Mele. With over 40 years of history, Washington-Morgan has proven to be a strong asset in the community. By running a variety of successful and vital community programs, they have continued to help individuals and families achieve growth and success.

The Community Action Partnership, a national membership organization representing the interests of 1,100 Community Action Agencies, designates May as National Community Action Month to recognize the work of CAAs in fighting poverty on the local level. Each year, CAAs help 13 million Americans escape poverty and achieve financial stability through programs such as Head Start, job training, and weatherization and housing.

Statewide in Ohio, CAAs serve nearly 800,000 low-income individuals annually. The 52 agencies in Ohio administer $750,000,000 in resources aimed at alleviating the problems of poverty in local communities.

Washington-Morgan Community Action operates over 50 programs such as employment and training, family health services, senior and outreach services, housing and transportation, and Head Start. They have grown from modest beginnings to a major employer and service provider in the area. Washington-Morgan Community Action is truly dedicated to helping people help themselves.

“Washington-Morgan Community Action began as a collaboration of community leaders,” said David Brightbill, executive director of Washington-Morgan Community Action. “We continue to grow and develop in order to help as many people as possible achieve economic self-sufficiency.”
