Kids Day Out participants, staff and volunteers, gather for a group picture on the Marietta College campus.
Marietta College Student Partners with
WMCAP To Create “Kid’s Day Out”

Receiving an education after high school is becoming more important with each passing decade. Encouraging students to continue their education can become difficult with the rising cost of tuition and the lack of encouragement. These factors are what produced the idea for a project that would encourage preschool students to begin thinking about their future.

Kid’s Day Out is a project developed by Washington-Morgan Counties Community Action, and Marietta College sophomore Nicole Jackson. The two partners applied for a Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Foundation grant which would provide $1,000 to projects that help create a partnership between organizations as well as help the community. In January the partnership was notified it had received one of the grants and began quickly working on Kid’s Day Out, which was set to take place in May 2008.

Head Start children from the Norwood Center were brought to the Marietta College campus on May 9th for a day full of fun activities such as making play dough, drawing what they want to be when they grow up, and taking a tour of the college campus. The children got to see the geology department and large dinosaur fossils. All of the children received a free t-shirt, Barney career storybook, and a photo DVD of the entire day so they can continue to remember their day at Marietta College. The day was a hit for everyone involved; even the Marietta College student volunteers and Head Start teachers had fun.

Another Kid’s Day Out is already being planned for next year in hopes that a different group of children will benefit from the experience. Kid’s Day Out is a creative way for the young children in our community to begin thinking about their futures, and seeing that college really is a possibility for everyone.
