Senator Sherrod Brown jokes with members of the weatherization crew during his visit to the WMCAP office.
Senator Sherrod Brown Visits
Washington-Morgan Community Action

United States Senator Sherrod Brown made a brief stop at Washington-Morgan Community Action on March 26, 2008 to talk about the high cost of energy. With gas prices in Marietta up nearly $1 per gallon from this time last year, Brown is challenging President Bush’s energy policy. As oil prices have been climbing, Ohio’s already financially stressed middle class and low income families are feeling the pinch.

Senator Brown spoke with many of the weatherization crew members about what they do and see each day. The Home Weatherization Assistance Program helps families reduce heating and cooling costs by increasing efficient energy use. By analyzing a home’s energy efficiency, staff can install insulation and weather stripping, or take other measures to reduce the family’s heating and cooling costs. As a result of the Home Weatherization Assistance Program, households experience energy efficiency and health and safety gains. It is estimated that a weatherized home will cut energy use by an estimated 25%. Washington-Morgan Community Action has weatherized 77 homes over the last year with another 100 families on a waiting list.

Senator Brown spoke about the opportunity that the state of Ohio has to harness the development of alternative energy. By being one of the first to develop and manufacture alternative energy sources, such as solar panels and wind energy, Brown believes both employment and the economy in Ohio can be stimulated.

Senator Brown is a long time supporter of the programs that Washington-Morgan Community Action provides to the residents of Washington and Morgan Counties, Ohio. Senator Brown has supported legislation related to senior programs, energy, agriculture, health and community services.
