Head Start Prepares for a New Year One of the surest signs that fall is coming soon is the increase of school buses on the road. If you look carefully, starting September 23rd you will notice that some of these buses are filled with Community Action Head Start students. Closely following the local school calendars, Head Start is preparing to greet our returning families and welcome new ones. Head Start has been busy over the summer and is absorbed in getting ready for the new year. New books and materials have been purchased for the classrooms, daycare homes, and Home Base Visitors. (Home Base Visitors are professionals who bring Head Start services into a child's home.) Some classrooms have been moved around to better accommodate the needs of our children. Various manners of recruitment have been occurring, including hanging posters, distributing leaflets, commercials, parades and knocking on doors. Managers have been busy making sure that we are meeting each of our 600+ regulations. These regulations, called performance standards, are issued by the federal government and are one of the reasons Head Start is the most comprehensive and effective preschool program available. Head Start staff returned September 2nd and presently is beginning to make the final preparations for the first day of school. Center teachers are sorting through books and materials while arranging their classrooms. Family Advocates are contacting families, enrolling students, and doing paper work. Home Base Visitors are out knocking on doors in some of the more remote areas of Washington and Morgan Counties. All of this activity adds up to a bi-county wide preschool program ready to take on all the fun, adventure, and excitement of a new school year. As of this writing, there are only a few spaces left.
